The nail root is located under the skin, behind the visible part of the nail (nail plate). It consists of both nerves and blood veins. Blood is mainly what nourishes the nail root and stimulates its growth. Poor blood circulation, which is often noticeable from cold hands, or if a tight ring is worn, causes poor blood circulation, and may slow nail growth.
